I am Tusharika Arora, a recent graduate from OCAD University with an Honours Bachelor of Design in Digital Futures. My artistic journey began with a fascination for how intricate designs can convey profound messages, evolving into a dedicated practice as an embroidery artist. My work centers on the theme "It's about the small things," a concept that highlights the importance of cherishing the simple, often overlooked moments in our lives.
Embroidery, a timeless art form with deep cultural roots, forms the foundation of my practice. I aim to innovate within this traditional craft by infusing contemporary elements and experimenting with new designs and techniques. By merging digital design principles with traditional stitching methods, I create vibrant, innovative pieces that resonate with modern audiences while honoring the rich heritage of embroidery.
My practice is defined by a commitment to showcasing the beauty of small details. Each piece transforms fleeting moments into lasting art, whether through intricately embroidered jewelry, accessories, or decorative items. My goal is to craft unique, wearable pieces that capture personal stories and evoke meaningful connections with those who experience them.
At OCAD University, my education in digital design has equipped me with skills that I now integrate into my embroidery work. This fusion of traditional techniques and modern aesthetics allows me to explore new patterns, textures, and colors, resulting in designs that are both contemporary and deeply personal.
The creation process begins with capturing inspiration through photography during my travels or daily walks. These images guide my design process as I sketch patterns onto cotton cloth, bringing them to life with traditional needle and thread. Each stitch is deliberately placed to enhance texture and depth, ensuring that the final piece resonates with the essence of the captured moment.
Recently, I've expanded my practice by transferring embroidery designs onto adjustable rings, charms, and keychains. Using molds originally intended for resin crafts, I create unique jewelry pieces, and small wooden embroidery hoops allow me to craft charming accessories. This exploration of different mediums and formats broadens the reach of my work and offers new ways for people to engage with my art.
As I continue to develop my practice, I am excited to explore new techniques and creative possibilities within the realm of embroidery. My aim is to create art that celebrates the beauty of small moments and adds a touch of elegance and nostalgia to everyday life, inspiring others to appreciate the simple joys that define our experiences.
